Match Preview: Chelsea v Sunderland

Chelsea take on Sunderland this weekend in the Premier League in what is shaping up to be an exciting encounter at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have been building some momentum in the league, winning 2 in a row and 4 in a row in all competitions, all without their star man Cole Palmer. The newly promoted Sunderland have made a good start to their Premier League season, sitting in 7th position in the table and on the same amount of points as Chelsea.

Fixture History

Chelsea and Sunderland have faced each other a total of 125 times across all competitions, with Chelsea winning the head to head record having won 61 times from these meetings. The last time the two clubs met at Stanford Bridge, Chelsea won comfortably putting 5 past Sunderland that day. Sunderland last beat the Blues all the way back in 2016 and it was a big win for their survival hopes in the Premier League.

Predicted Line-ups and Team News

Chelsea's main attacking threat Cole Palmer will be out once again as he continues to recover from a groin injury. The Blues have been performing well without Palmer, however he is still of course an important player in the squad and will be missed again this weekend.

There is some positive news however with Chelsea striker Liam Delap taking part in full team training. Although he won't be available against Sunderland, Maresca said in his press conference that he thinks that he will play midweek against Wolves. Sunderland have no major injuries and will likely remain unchanged from last weekend against Wolves, with the exception of Omar Alderete who is set to miss the game due to a concussion.

Chelsea (4-2-3-1) Sanchez, Cucurella, Chalobah, Acheampong, James, Lavia, Caicedo, Garnacho, Fernandez, Neto, Joao Pedro

Sunderland (4-2-3-1) Roefs, Mukiele, Ballard, Hume, Sadiki, Xhaka, Le Fee, Rigg, Adingra, Isidor

Score prediction

I think this game will be an exciting watch for the fans., based on Chelsea's current form, I expect them to win the game comfortably. Sunderland have had a good to start the season, however a large part of that is down to the schedule and who they have played. A tough away game like this one will be a real test for them and I am looking forward to seeing what they can produce. As I said, I think Chelsea will be just a little too much for the Black Cats this weekend and they will win the game 3-0.
